ABSTRACT:

Inevidence-basedpractices,narrativesarethevehiclethroughwhichmedicalknowledgeissharedandclinicaljudgmentisgrounded.ThispaperexploresnarrativesasasanctionedsocialpracticethathelpagroupofcliniciansinahealthcareinstitutioninNewZealandbuildandnegotiateexpertiseandaccountability,astheydiscussclinicalcases.Tothisend,thepaperinvestigatesnarrativesinsixstaffmeetings,whichwerevideoandaudiorecorded.Thepaperpresentsadiscursiveanalysisofthefunctionsofnarrativesinthiscontexttoshowhownarrativesareinteractionalachievementsthatarepivotaltoclinicaldecision-makingandtobuildingandcontestingprofessionalstances.Finally,thepaperreflectsonthevalueofnarrativesassharedresourcesthataresometimesrevisitedandreframedovertimeandthathelpconstructa
